THE RAINY PREFACE

The first thought
10.45 PM – It is raining
10.45 AM – It was raining

I am seated in the farthest suburb of Mumbai, which according to residents of SoBo (South Bombay) can’t even stand eligible to be addressed as NoBo (North Bombay). I am seated in my very own corner, writing this piece; also thinking, how nothing has changed in a course of 12 hours. Not the people, not the conversations, not the conspiracies; nothing at all has changed. Neither do I expect them to change because it is me, who has to become the change.

Skipping work came naturally. I am happy I skipped making fool of myself as well. As the rains kept lashing, journalists of innumerable news channels turned into weather experts and kept reporting bullshit. But am I supposed to complain? Nah! Instead I kept staring at the rains, from the comfort of my dream home. Every drop of rain left me with these lines, which I call the rainy preface (also the title of this blog) –
TODAY IT RAINED
TODAY IT POURED
I STOOD DRENCHED
FOR A MOMENT, I FELT
ARE THESE RAINS CAPABLE ENOUGH
OF MELTING A MORTAL BEING LIKE ME?
ME… THE @#@*@#@*@#

The special characters form the name of my second book. For days, I’ve wanted to start working on my second book. I invested an entire year, thinking of it. I invested an entire year, trying to adjust to it. Interestingly, I invested two years extending my seva, my meva to a place, which in return has given me new lessons to learn from for a good life (this line is dedicated to the advisors, who will continue holding me wrong for all reasons and once again ask me to not get frustrated, stay diplomatic, decent).

The Final Thought
11.00 PM – It is raining
11.00 AM – It was raining

Away from the trappings of emotions, WhatsApp messages, birthday wishes, Facebook likes & dislikes; I lived through a peaceful day. This day was exactly the kind of day I wish to have a constant affair with. I drove in my car, walked below my umbrella and continued conversing with some intelligent minds. Some questions did come my way. I chose not to answer them. I am sure, some will come advising me again of being obsessed and being wrong. Having decided to follow what the heart prompts, I continued being myself and kept chanting a mantra for my well-wishers – My Foot, My Foot, Foot, Foot, Foot. They disappeared!

Concluding on a happy note by saying… Writing begins and continues every single day!

SUNRISE ON THE FIRST SUNDAY OF JULY

My car is parked in the open. The beams of bright sunlight have been constantly hitting its roof since morning. As my eyes stretch out of my gallery and from the window of my bedroom, I see the top portions of some roofs, which are covered with blue plastic sheets, reflecting the brightness of sunlight. I am trying to put a strong belief in place; this is the second month of Indian monsoons. What we are faced with is a sign of delayed monsoons ahead. If told differently, the monsoons may just prolong themselves.

Going by the beginning of this blog and reading through the title, may create an impression of a geological article or an environmental thesis. Sorry to say, none of the both can be associated with this written piece. What I wish to write now has nothing to do with both and yet has something to do or undo, with regards to both!

July is supposed; I hope I am writing it right when I say – July is supposed to be the month of heavy downpour. The skies are supposed to be constantly overcast. At least from the time, I started appreciating or avoiding the monsoons, all months of July in my 39 seasons of monsoons, have looked the same. But one of the Julys from the many Julys could be figured out being different. Maybe this is just that kind of a different July. But why am I speaking so much about this specific month, out of the 4 crucial months of monsoon? There could be a reason.

The sunrise in the title is symbolic of hope. The first Sunday in the title is symbolic of inspiration. The July in this title is symbolic of present phase of life.

From the past few months, I’ve been witnessing the rise of a phenomenon around me. I would like to tag or label or call this phenomenon as something vexatious#1. Even though I have been trying my level best to ignore this evolution, I still get tousled in its web.

The minds behind this phenomenon, which I now label as Something Vexatious, come with their own share of history. I would like to raise an alarm in here. This is not exactly the kind of history someone could be proud of. This history is truculent#2 in nature. Even though, I haven’t dug deeper into their past. But, I am sure, they have remained this way throughout their lives. This is what their present is all about. This is what their future will be all about. The only exception being me and some others, supposedly like me.

As the phenomenon keeps getting heavier and affecting optimism, my mind fluctuates between grimness of heavy monsoons in July and expectation of sunrise someway.

Therefore, when I woke up at some other place this morning and peeped out of the window, my eyes fell on the beams of a sunrise, which prompted me that hope is still alive. When my eyes fell on the calendar, it reminded me of today being Sunday and also made me aware of the reality that inspiration is not yet dead.

To conclude with an ode to present phase of my life, I wish to write – Hello July. This is my month, our month to excel. No matter, where the propellers of the vexatious phenomenon come from, I shall triumph, we shall triumph!

STARDUST ON HER EYELIDS

I wasn’t expecting the rains to come lashing back towards the fading end of September. Despite the reasons potent enough to complain against this fluid recurrence, I continued traveling adamantly. Purely driven by the instinct of the tireless Train Spotter Updater within me, this evening was no different. I had just left the metro behind me. The rains had started swelling. Each drop hit against the skin like missiles. Trains were plying way behind their schedule. But I remained unshaken. I was chasing the solo objective of boarding a train, protecting myself from the rains and trying to make it home on time. I was eagerly waiting for the train to arrive.

The train’s arrival sparked an infectious excitement among all eager bystanders on the platform. I was one of them; the Train Spotter Updater. As the train came to a halt, I jumped in and cut my way through the crowd. Even though my intentions were pure but my actions seemed otherwise. Pushed, pressed and pressurized against my wishes, I found myself almost squeezed against the giant screen of the gent’s first class. This giant screen is a passport to fantasies unlimited. This giant screen is also called the video coach. This is a gold window for us men to get to stare at women traveling by fist class. Some of us stare with loads of love in our eyes and some with unapologetic lust. Not too excited with this prospect, I continued making some space to stand comfortably. The train started picking up speed, so did the rains. Many arguments later, the women in the first class agreed to close the doors of the compartment. This gesture of theirs helped us men stay dry.

Two stations later, I too couldn’t resist the temptation of staring at the giant screen. My eyes fell on her. If I am not mistaken, she was on her way back home after attending an event. Or maybe she was one of those who sell highly priced brands of nail paint, lipsticks, kohl etc from behind those counters of beauty in a mall. Dressed in a dull pink top and a black skirt she was trying against her own luck to save the makeup. It was eroding. Yet she looked stunning. Especially because of what shone on her eyelids.

A thick layer of stardust seemed to have claimed their occupancy on her eyelids. The rains had left a few parts of it wet. Delicately but with great care, she was still trying to save it. In between regular intervals, she would pull out her mobile, activate the camera and put it on selfie mode to keep checking if the stardust was wearing off.  I could see her smile. If that wasn’t enough, she would pout, click multiple selfies and stash the mobile back in her bag. She kept repeating her actions. I continued gazing at her. The train was slowing down. The rains were roaring. Yet the stardust on her eyelids continued shining.

The journey concluded. The fury of rains continued intensifying. I saw her walking; a few yards ahead of me. Following her was not on her mind. But going ahead, she herself paused. I continued reducing my speed of walking. Had she caught me gazing? Had she sensed me following? I didn’t see any of it coming. Taking a pause, she pulled out her mobile again, activated the camera and put it on selfie mode. I started walking across her. I turned around and found her seated on a bench. After a short while, she too started walking; this time out of the station. The thickening effect of rains seemed to directly threaten the stardust on her eyelids. But she started saving it with great pain, not allowing the stardust to wither. I stood there, watching her. The rains were showing no signs of stopping and neither were my eyes tired of dreaming.

TREK #1 09072017 Stage 1

It goes somewhat like this and a lot less like that.

Much before July 9, 2017 came into my life; I had religiously followed the unreasonable urge in me to avoid embarking on a trek.

Trek in the language of a dictionary means ‘a journey or trip, especially one involving difficulty or hardship’.

Many eons ago, when I would get invited by a friend, colleague, well-wisher or a professional partner to be a part of a trek; I would shudder!

But from mid-2016 (once again, the month of July to be precise), things had started changing for me! Some of my colleagues had trekked their way to Matheran. They uploaded these pictures on the social media. Mist was their backdrop. The wet piece of marshy land beneath their feet was their landing pad. The smile on their faces was the reward of a trek well completed. Temptation had set in. I clearly remember telling this to them, “If you plan a trek next time, I shall join in”.

I realized, I needed some more time to make up my mind, muster courage, fortify my determination, configure my apprehensive organs and convince the ‘little negative me’ in me to embark on my first ever trek. Sadly and happily it took me a year to finally say YES against the many Nos which continued to defeat my decision. In short, I trekked!

As I lifted my feet and began climbing over the immense offering of nature (also called a mountain), the unreasonable urge to avoid trekking diminished.

This is the story of that trek. It’s not based on a true story. But it’s the true story of my first ever trek. All the characters in this story are real. This is not a work of fiction or an effort at creating new metaphors. This is sheer originality at play. Let me tag this post and the following blog posts as distinct in mood, dramatic by nature, dashing in telling and dynamic at its core.

Starring first time trekkers, seasonal trekkers, pro trekkers, a trek instructor and his partner; this is truth about a trek well told.

This blog post/this story of my first trek contains no added flavor or colors. All of it is natural and any coincidence to the living, reincarnated, forgotten or remembered is purely coincidental or deliberate by nature.

To conclude, I would like to quote - Every action has a first. Every first is an action.

RAINS ETCETERA

1.55 AM of June 26, 2017 is possibly the same time, the previous day (June 25), the rains debuted. The drizzles of Friday evening, the onslaught of Thursday or the suddenness of Wednesday stood nowhere closer to what ensued last night; continued to surprise till today afternoon. Rains, we thought are here. But by 1.55 AM of June 26, 2017 the show put up by the rains lack the ferocity, velocity and audacity of last night.

Did the earth hatch a conspiracy to attract rains? Is this then the annual moment of romance? Speaking of romance, I can only think of Raveena Tandon causing Yellow Fever in Tip tip barsaa paani (Akshay Kumar literally rolling and drooling around her).

Thankfully no political party has claimed responsibility for the instant burst of happiness insured by these rains.  Thankfully no terrorist groups have threatened of being in secret possession of weapons, which can trigger massive rains at the drop of a hat.

At this interesting juncture, I think rains come with their own package of etcetera (etc.).

As the rains swell, the pulse rate of Mumbai’s local train network drops. Even though the spirits of travellers and train spotter updaters like me fly high, the trains prefer to take it easy. This being one part of the package, we aren’t downplaying the possibilities of traffic snarls. Many of us blame it on the rains. But these snarls are necessary during monsoons. Or else air and noise pollution won’t breed. Would we really like to see them fail at producing their usual off springs of anguish, irritability and disasters?

Trees are the permanent subscribers of rains package of etcetera. They keep on putting weight all year long. Just when they expect the municipal authorities to help them tone their body a little, their trust is left betrayed. So when the rains descend they activate the package and start falling on cars, humans, electricity cables, telephone wires and at times on themselves.

When rains dwindle, I am reminded of the seminars on climate change. I love the venues, the speakers, their sessions and the hosts who keep pouting at television cameras. If the talks held in these seminars are real, do they also work towards decreasing the impact of etcetera?

Thirty minutes into writing this and the rains have retracted. But mind you, the package of etcetera hasn’t.

I heard the dogs bark and see them running in pursuit of a hefty catch? I only hope they don’t spare its life. Because if they do, the rains might make it rot and the package of etcetera might grow hefty. We may have to pay an extra premium of tolerating the strange stench. Dogs are illiterate. They only understand the language of love and the unconditional freedom to poop.

The rains will recuperate; we can hope at least. The package of etcetera though requires rethinking.

Till it rains again, I am thinking of ordering etcetera online (much before GST slaps in).

EVER SAY, ALWAYS AGAIN

My mother has very recently taken to reading. She also expressed, how happy she is; after I introduced her to this hobby. We have our in-house library, comprising books; purchased from book fairs, from bookshops, airports, roadside, seconds shops, gifted, stolen, borrowed, smuggled, imported and also pirated versions. She somehow never fancied reading any of them. When I handed over to her a copy of Shantaram by Gregory David Roberts; she had asked, “Is this a book or a mythological epic, which you might never end reading?” Luckily I read the same and also narrated to her in not less than thirty minutes flat, a summary of what I thought was the most powerful piece of writing.

Coming back to my mother’s recent stint with reading, she is now booked, devotedly and dedicatedly with Pratham Alo (First Light), written by Sunil Gangopadhyay.  Respected for his style of writing, remembered for the characters created by him (my favorite though is Hathat Nirar Janya) and the favorite author of controversies, Sunil Gangopadhyay has weaved a tale that chronicles the lives of West Bengal’s ‘Renaissance Era’. As she continued reading, she brought to my notice an instance, wherein the author is describing Kabiguru Rabindranath Tagore’s penchant for writing. It seems, when the great author used to settle down to write a story, he had this habit of allowing his mind to drift. He would create multiple stories from a single theme or multiple themes from a single story. His style of writing was so inspirational that many were not only left surprised by his caliber but also the gems he bestowed on us, the benevolent Bengalis.

This instance takes me back to the memory of the play ‘Colour Blind’, directed by Manav Kaul that attempts to rediscover Rabindranath Tagore. Swanand Kirkire, one of India’s best lyricist, plays the role of death in this play. He is shown visiting Rabindranath Tagore during his last days. Dressed in black, he calls upon the author and informs, “Your time is over. Let’s go now.” To which, Rabindranath Tagore replies in an engaged tone, “No not now. I’ve many things pending to be written down.” This irritates death and he remarks pointing Rabindranath Tagore to the audience, “What kind of human being is he? Every time I have come to his home, I’ve found him drowned in writing. The day his mother died, he was writing. The day his wife passed away, I saw him writing. The day his first child breathed last, he was writing. How can this man be so addicted to writing?”

Writing, I believe is an act of pure passion. But looking at the silence that I had allowed this blog to slip into; I think writing has also got to do a lot with the circumstances around us. If I call myself a blogger, I have definitely not been a regular at it. My last blog post was on March 24, 2015. Post which, I’m writing today (one month later) and may or may not post this piece on my blog, in a short while or a long while. Where have I been all these days?

All these days, I had been writing but not on a piece of paper, not in a word document and neither in my regular diary; but my writing has been happening imaginably in my mind. Apart from that I’ve been carrying a few small diaries in my bag, during outdoor trips; in these diaries I’ve been making quick notes. Then there is my iPhone, which has an inbuilt Notes App to help me punch in, whatever I observe, listen and experience. At the same time, my facebook wall bears testimony to a lot of my writings. But the real writing regularity that I wish to remain associated with, suffers from occasional bouts of procrastination. On my birthday this year, I had started writing a (so called) novel; a love story between two people. I chose to term it or rather categorize it as an unethical story. I’ve no issues with the controversies and criticism, this debut book of mine might attract. But from the inception point of writing this novel, I’ve decided to remain unfazed by anything. The funny thing though is that I’ve written and discarded all the four drafts, of the very first chapter that I had written of the book. At this moment, most of this book of mine is a part of my daydreaming. Even though I don’t want to divulge much about the theme and the characters, two things play an important role in this book of mine – Mumbai Monsoons and the Arabian Sea. I think most of the inspiration for the parts, I wish to write about Mumbai Monsoons arrives from the 1979 song ‘Rimjhim Gire Saawan’ from the classic Amitabh Bachchan and Moushumi Chatterjee starrer Manzil. The song is so well shot; it is difficult to make out as to when the onscreen lovers are getting wet in the real or unreal rains. Definitely a masterpiece of yesteryear, the song brings alive in me emotions that are real and inspiring. Only in my story, the monsoon slips into different roles of playing the cupid, the betrayer and also at times – the storyteller.

Speaking about writing, I’m not being completely passive. An eBook publishing company has already readied my first poetry book of fifty poems. It is only me, who has delayed authorizing the version and am yet to allow it, to be made available for download. The book ran into some serious technical errors. Designed laboriously by my wife (to whom I shall remain indebted infinitely), my first book of fifty poems looks warm, romantic and desirable. The eBook publishers failed to understand that emotion and had messed up with the final copy of compilations. Outraged and upset, I curse myself for not having gone the Amazon way of making it available on KINDLE. But now that the crooked patches have been ironed out and post my authorization, the book is good to go.

In the coming days, I might be in many moods – happy, sad, lazy, active! I might choose to travel extensively or prefer staying locked in a room or watch back-to-back movies. Therefore I am again apprehensive; my writing might hibernate. The only way to continue being in writing, is to try and write more, read more and of course keep writing more.

Till the next time I write, I shall ever say, always again.
